Unexpected Storms

I could expand on, blather about, and pontificate an analogy of life based on the title of the blog today but it really is about an unexpected storm.  It has been sunny, not a cloud in the sky, mid-80s and some of most perfect weather that I remember in years.  Yesterday, I checked the weather forecast because I got a few cords of wood delivered and was wondering when the first cold night would be.  The forecast for last night and today said more clouds, a few showers, then clearing up and cooler.  The N.C. State Fair starts today and the weather is cooperating.  Given the sky when the sun set, I anticipated no rain.  (Why are you chuckling?)

I went to bed around midnight after another homework marathon.  I checked the dogs, secured the house and went to bed.  Not a few hours later (I thought) the dogs barked, the thunder rolled and the lightening was competing for attention.  The dogs got even weirder than normal so I let in the one dog in that will only come inside if he is scared out of his wits.  That made 8 dogs inside, all with very low thresholds for weather phenomena, and 1 outside attached to a long, metal lead and 1 down in the shop with the doors wide open.  I'll give you a minute to get a mental picture.  Yep, it was that chaotic.

I looked at the clock, given the darkness outside, and knew it was only about 3 or 4 a.m.  Nope, it was 7 am.  Dark as pitch with only the lightening providing any change of scenery.  I was not prepared.  (there is that chuckling again...)  The ducks were in heaven, though, quacking all around the front yard as they reveled in the water rolling off their backs.  (I had to get that one in there)  The mower had not been covered, my projects still strewn around the front yard but at least the car windows were up.

An unexpected storm created a small amount of excitement this morning.  I can't do one thing about it except hunker down, keep safe, and marvel at the wonder of Mother Nature's volatile moods.  The dogs will hopefully calm down by Sunday.  I will go out and survey the damage.  I'll be picking up branches, garbage, paper, and try to salvage my project supplies.  It smells wonderful outside, clean, fresh, cool and fall-ish.  The sun just now peeked out.  I know there are some lessons here but I just want to enjoy the storm's wake.  There will be enough time for pondering about life when the snow falls and I am thawing out in front of a fireplace.

  3. Yes, I know the analogy. Those southern storms can be quite spectacular. I used to want to stay home when one would hit in the morning. Now I can. It is awesome.
